But ye shall receive
power, after that the Holy Ghost is come upon you: and ye shall be
witnesses unto me both in Jerusalem, and in all Judaea, and in
Samaria, and unto the uttermost part of the earth. Acts 1:8
Here at Leatherwood Baptist Church, we believe this scripture means
that we are to take the Gospel message to the entire world. We begin
by learning about and praying for missionaries in our RA, GA, and
Mission Friends programs, and by contributing to the Cooperative
Program which supports missionaries both here at home and around the
world. But we don’t stop at merely learning, praying and giving. We
perform mission work in our community by ministering to the needs of
our church members, supporting and working at the Baptist Service
Center, and supporting and participating in Meals of Mercy. We are
also involved with our local Sav-A-Life, as well as in working with
World Changers each year to perform repairs on local homes. We also
send mission teams to meet needs in other areas.
Ongoing Mission Projects
A member of Leatherwood felt a call from God about 12 years ago
to minister to Native Americans and contacted the Fellowship of
American Indian church in Chickasha, Oklahoma. Since then, he has
led Leatherwood to help support this church (which is in a poor
section of town) in ministering to that community. Two mission trips
per year are made to Oklahoma for this purpose. Each summer, a team
repairs/maintains their church building, conducts a Vacation Bible
School, and holds evangelistic meetings. Each December, Christmas
packages (donated by church members) are delivered to approximately
150 children.
Previous Mission Trips
In the summer of 2007, we sent a team to East Lawn Baptist
Church in Pascagoula, Mississippi, to rebuild a drive-through awning
which was destroyed by Hurricane Katrina.
During the summer of 2008, we teamed with Monumental Baptist Church
of Petersburg, Virginia, to visit a small church in Nuevo Progreso,
Mexico. We were able to perform building repairs and paint their
fellowship hall and auditorium. We held a Vacation Bible School at
which over 100 children prayed to receive Jesus as their personal
Savior. Revival services were held on Sunday and Wednesday nights
and 15 adults prayed to receive Jesus as Savior and Lord of their
lives.
